Frequently asked
questions

Honest answers to the questions every Indian student asks before, during, and after the study abroad process.

UK Visa
What is the minimum IELTS score required for a UK Student Visa?+
Most UK universities require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5. The UKVI minimum is lower, but universities set their own thresholds. We will tell you the exact requirement for each university on your shortlist.
How much money do I need to show for a UK Student Visa?+
You need to show full first year tuition fees plus living costs for 9 months. That is GBP 1,334 per month for London or GBP 1,023 per month outside London. These funds must be held in a bank account for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
How long does UK Student Visa processing take from India?+
Standard processing from India is approximately 3 weeks. We recommend applying at least 6 to 8 weeks before your course start date to account for biometrics appointment availability.
Can I work while studying in the UK?+
Yes. Student Visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during official university vacation periods. You cannot be self-employed or work as a professional sportsperson on this visa.
What is the Graduate Route Visa?+
The Graduate Route allows you to stay in the UK after completing your degree and work in any job, any sector, for 2 years if you completed a bachelor or masters, or 3 years for a PhD. No employer sponsorship is required and you can apply from inside the UK.
My UK visa was refused before. Can I still apply?+
Yes. A previous refusal does not automatically disqualify you, but it must be addressed properly. We review your refusal letter, identify the exact reason, and build a stronger reapplication. Do not reapply without understanding why the first one was refused.
Admissions
How many universities should I apply to?+
We typically recommend applying to 4 to 6 universities per student — a mix of ambitious, realistic, and safe choices based on your profile. Applying to too few increases risk. Applying to too many wastes application fees.
What IELTS score do I need for UK universities?+
Most postgraduate programmes require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. Top universities like Manchester, Warwick, and Birmingham often require 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Some foundation programmes accept 5.5. We match you to universities within your current or achievable band.
Do I need a Statement of Purpose?+
Yes, for almost every UK university. An SOP is one of the most important parts of your application. It is your opportunity to explain why this specific programme, at this specific university, makes sense for your career. A weak SOP loses offers. A strong SOP wins them.
Can I apply with a gap year in my academic history?+
Yes, but you need to explain the gap clearly in your personal statement. Universities want to understand what you did during the gap. Work experience, family circumstances, and health reasons are all valid — they just need to be addressed honestly.
When should I start the application process?+
Ideally 8 to 10 months before your intended course start date. For January intakes, start in April. For September intakes, start in October or November the year before. Starting late reduces your university options and adds stress.
Does GoAbroadly guarantee an offer letter?+
No. Any consultancy that guarantees an offer letter is lying to you. We cannot control university admissions decisions. What we guarantee is an honest assessment of your profile, the strongest possible application, and guidance at every step.
Finance & Loans
How much does studying in the UK actually cost?+
For a 1 year postgraduate programme, budget approximately GBP 15,000 to 25,000 for tuition and GBP 10,000 to 18,000 for living costs depending on the city. London is the most expensive. Sheffield, Coventry, and Northumbria are significantly more affordable.
Which Indian banks give education loans for UK study?+
SBI, HDFC Credila, Avanse, Axis Bank, and InCred are the main lenders for UK education. Secured loans (with collateral) go up to Rs 1.5 crore. Unsecured loans typically cap at Rs 40 to 50 lakhs. The right lender depends on your profile and collateral availability.
Do I need collateral for an education loan?+
Not always. Several NBFCs including HDFC Credila, Avanse, and Prodigy Finance offer unsecured loans for students going to top-ranked universities. If your university ranking is strong and your co-applicant has a good CIBIL score, unsecured options are available.
What is the IHS surcharge and how much is it?+
The Immigration Health Surcharge is a mandatory payment that gives you access to the NHS during your stay. It is currently GBP 776 per year and must be paid upfront as part of your visa application. For a 2 year course, you pay GBP 1,552 at the time of applying.
GoAbroadly charges zero fees. How does that work?+
We earn through university partnerships and referral arrangements with select financial service providers. You pay us nothing. This model only works if we get you to the right university and your visa gets approved — so our incentive is 100 percent aligned with your success.
Can I get a scholarship for UK study?+
Yes. Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT Scholarships, and university-specific scholarships are available. Most require strong academics, a clear career vision, and an early application. We help identify scholarships you are eligible for and guide the application process.

What if my visa is refused after you file it?+
We analyse the refusal, identify the reason, and advise on the strongest path forward. This may be a reapplication with strengthened documentation or an appeal depending on the refusal grounds. We have successfully reapplied for students with prior refusals.
