Chevening, Commonwealth, university specific scholarships, and departmental funding. What exists, who qualifies, and how to actually apply.
The Reality of UK Scholarships for Indian Students
Most students ask about scholarships and most are disappointed. Here is an honest breakdown of what actually exists and who gets it.
Chevening Scholarship
Fully funded. Covers tuition, living costs, flights, and a stipend. Open to students with 2 years of work experience. Extremely competitive — roughly 1,500 awards globally per year from tens of thousands of applicants. Applications open in August each year.
Commonwealth Scholarships
For students from Commonwealth countries pursuing specific development-related fields. Strong preference for students who will return and contribute to their home country. Not for students who intend to stay in the UK.
University Scholarships
Almost every UK university offers merit-based scholarships for international students. These are typically GBP 2,000 to 5,000 off tuition — not full funding. They are worth applying for.
Our Partner University Scholarships
Through GoAbroadly's university partnerships, our students regularly access additional scholarship and fee reduction opportunities not publicly advertised. This is one of the real advantages of working with a registered consultancy.
How to Apply
Apply for the course first. Get your unconditional offer. Then apply for the scholarship. Most university scholarships are automatic with the offer or require a short statement of purpose.
